I used Mulch Mound to have 3 cubic yards of garden soil delivered. The process was easy and I love that I didn't have to call anyone. I placed my order online, picked my delivery date, laid out my tarp and the dirt was delivered. My delivery had to be pushed back, but I was kept informed via text, which was great. So why not 5 stars? The description of garden soil on the website is "A balanced mix of topsoil and organic amendments ready for raised beds, flower gardens, and new planting areas. Good drainage, solid nutrients, easy to work with." What I got was more like fill dirt. It had a lot of gravel, a lot of clay, and random trash mixed in. I didn't test the soil to see if it actually had "amendments" because I already have compost and alpaca manure ready to add, but if I'd known the quality of the dirt was going to be the same as the bagged dirt I bought last year, I probably would have gotten 2 yards of top soil and a yard of leaf compost for better quality, especially since the leaf compost is cheaper. Photo of my mountain of dirt and just some of the trash I found in it.

Bee Ridge gardeners who rely heavily on container planting should avoid using native sandy soil as a potting medium, since it drains too fast and offers little nutritional value for potted plants. A quality bulk or bagged potting mix blended with compost gives container roots the structure and nutrients they need to thrive in Florida's persistent heat. Top-dressing containers with a thin layer of fine mulch also reduces surface evaporation, meaning pots need watering less frequently during the hottest and driest months of the year.

Try Our CalculatorBee Ridge homeowners dealing with invasive weeds like chamberbitter or Florida betony should apply bulk mulch at a full three to four inch depth immediately after hand-pulling or treating problem areas. In zone 10a's year-round warmth, weed seeds germinate rapidly whenever bare soil is exposed to sunlight. A consistent mulch layer creates the first line of defense and dramatically reduces how much time you spend weeding Bee Ridge landscape beds throughout the entire growing season.

Bee Ridge properties with mature shade trees benefit from extending mulched rings as far out as the canopy drip line rather than just circling the trunk base. Tree roots in sandy Florida soil spread wide in search of moisture and nutrients. A broad mulch ring at three inches depth suppresses competing grass roots, retains moisture for the tree, and prevents soil compaction from foot traffic that can damage the surface roots common in Bee Ridge's heavily landscaped neighborhoods.
