I used Mulch Mound to have 3 cubic yards of garden soil delivered. The process was easy and I love that I didn't have to call anyone. I placed my order online, picked my delivery date, laid out my tarp and the dirt was delivered. My delivery had to be pushed back, but I was kept informed via text, which was great. So why not 5 stars? The description of garden soil on the website is "A balanced mix of topsoil and organic amendments ready for raised beds, flower gardens, and new planting areas. Good drainage, solid nutrients, easy to work with." What I got was more like fill dirt. It had a lot of gravel, a lot of clay, and random trash mixed in. I didn't test the soil to see if it actually had "amendments" because I already have compost and alpaca manure ready to add, but if I'd known the quality of the dirt was going to be the same as the bagged dirt I bought last year, I probably would have gotten 2 yards of top soil and a yard of leaf compost for better quality, especially since the leaf compost is cheaper. Photo of my mountain of dirt and just some of the trash I found in it.

Exeter gets roughly 10 inches of rain a year, nearly all of it between November and March, so build drip irrigation around that reality. Run fewer, longer cycles to push moisture 12 inches down instead of brief daily sips that keep roots shallow. Bury drip lines beneath the mulch layer to cut evaporation losses. Flush filters each spring before the heat arrives.

Try Our CalculatorExeter's clay loam compacts hard under foot traffic and summer heat, so top dress beds with a half inch of compost every fall before the rains arrive. Winter moisture carries the organic matter down into the profile and earthworms finish the job. Avoid working the soil when it is wet, since clay smeared in February turns into concrete clods by June. Wait until it crumbles in your hand.

Delivering to Exeter, California
Primary ZIP: 93221Citrus is everywhere around Exeter, and young trunks sunburn badly on the southwest side during July afternoons. Keep mulch pulled back 6 inches from the trunk flare to prevent collar rot, but extend the mulch ring out to the drip line where feeder roots actually live. A 3 inch bark layer under a mature navel tree cuts irrigation demand noticeably through the worst of the heat.
