I used Mulch Mound to have 3 cubic yards of garden soil delivered. The process was easy and I love that I didn't have to call anyone. I placed my order online, picked my delivery date, laid out my tarp and the dirt was delivered. My delivery had to be pushed back, but I was kept informed via text, which was great. So why not 5 stars? The description of garden soil on the website is "A balanced mix of topsoil and organic amendments ready for raised beds, flower gardens, and new planting areas. Good drainage, solid nutrients, easy to work with." What I got was more like fill dirt. It had a lot of gravel, a lot of clay, and random trash mixed in. I didn't test the soil to see if it actually had "amendments" because I already have compost and alpaca manure ready to add, but if I'd known the quality of the dirt was going to be the same as the bagged dirt I bought last year, I probably would have gotten 2 yards of top soil and a yard of leaf compost for better quality, especially since the leaf compost is cheaper. Photo of my mountain of dirt and just some of the trash I found in it.

We’ve got you covered with our full line of landscape supply products, from premium mulch and quality soil to decorative stone, helping you create a cohesive, professional landscape that enhances your property for years to come.
Many Iowa Colony homes were built on compacted, nutrient-stripped builder's soil that makes growing healthy plants an uphill battle from day one. Before planting any lawn or landscape bed, work three to four inches of quality compost or a blended garden soil mix into the top eight inches of existing ground. This builds the organic matter that the native clay loam needs to drain properly and support strong root development. The up-front investment in soil quality reduces plant losses, lowers watering frequency, and pays for itself within a single growing season.

Try Our CalculatorIowa Colony's relatively flat landscape and clay loam soils mean water can linger in yard low spots long after a rain event ends. When installing new planting beds, mound the soil slightly toward the center to promote runoff and apply 3 to 4 inches of bulk mulch to slow evaporation during dry summer stretches. Keeping the soil surface covered also reduces the hard-crust effect that bare clay develops when exposed to the direct Zone 9b sun.

Iowa Colony's newer subdivisions often have limited tree canopy, leaving yards exposed to intense summer sun for most of the day. Fast-growing native shade trees like live oak or Texas red oak establish more quickly when planted in well-amended soil surrounded by a wide mulch ring from day one. As the canopy fills in over several seasons, you can gradually introduce shade-tolerant ground covers and perennials beneath the branches to complete the landscape.
