I used Mulch Mound to have 3 cubic yards of garden soil delivered. The process was easy and I love that I didn't have to call anyone. I placed my order online, picked my delivery date, laid out my tarp and the dirt was delivered. My delivery had to be pushed back, but I was kept informed via text, which was great. So why not 5 stars? The description of garden soil on the website is "A balanced mix of topsoil and organic amendments ready for raised beds, flower gardens, and new planting areas. Good drainage, solid nutrients, easy to work with." What I got was more like fill dirt. It had a lot of gravel, a lot of clay, and random trash mixed in. I didn't test the soil to see if it actually had "amendments" because I already have compost and alpaca manure ready to add, but if I'd known the quality of the dirt was going to be the same as the bagged dirt I bought last year, I probably would have gotten 2 yards of top soil and a yard of leaf compost for better quality, especially since the leaf compost is cheaper. Photo of my mountain of dirt and just some of the trash I found in it.

Complete Your Port Isabel Outdoor Project
We’ve got you covered with our full line of landscape supply products, from premium mulch and quality soil to decorative stone, helping you create a cohesive, professional landscape that enhances your property for years to come.
Coastal winds and occasional storm surge make erosion control a top landscaping priority for Port Isabel homeowners near the waterfront. Planting dense, low-growing groundcovers like buffalo grass or Texas lantana and anchoring exposed soil with a thick layer of shredded mulch can significantly reduce surface erosion between rain events. For slopes or embankments, adding a border of river rock or decomposed granite as a base layer provides structural stability that organic mulch alone cannot deliver in the high-wind conditions common along the Laguna Madre shoreline.

Try Our CalculatorPort Isabel sits in Zone 10a, where the growing season stretches nearly year-round. The brief frost window between December 20 and January 31 is the right time to lay a fresh layer of mulch around tender tropicals and citrus. Doing so before the first cold snap helps insulate shallow root systems and reduces the chance of freeze damage during those few vulnerable weeks of winter.

Choosing native and Gulf-adapted plants for your Port Isabel landscape reduces the need for supplemental watering and fertilizing in the coastal heat. Species like Mexican Petunia, Turk's Cap, and Anacua thrive in the sandy clay mix near the bay and provide color from spring through fall. Pairing them with a light gravel mulch reflects less heat than dark bark and keeps root zones cooler during summer peaks.
