I used Mulch Mound to have 3 cubic yards of garden soil delivered. The process was easy and I love that I didn't have to call anyone. I placed my order online, picked my delivery date, laid out my tarp and the dirt was delivered. My delivery had to be pushed back, but I was kept informed via text, which was great. So why not 5 stars? The description of garden soil on the website is "A balanced mix of topsoil and organic amendments ready for raised beds, flower gardens, and new planting areas. Good drainage, solid nutrients, easy to work with." What I got was more like fill dirt. It had a lot of gravel, a lot of clay, and random trash mixed in. I didn't test the soil to see if it actually had "amendments" because I already have compost and alpaca manure ready to add, but if I'd known the quality of the dirt was going to be the same as the bagged dirt I bought last year, I probably would have gotten 2 yards of top soil and a yard of leaf compost for better quality, especially since the leaf compost is cheaper. Photo of my mountain of dirt and just some of the trash I found in it.

Santee gardeners planting California natives such as toyon, lemonade berry, or Cleveland sage should pay close attention to irrigation scheduling during the establishment phase, which typically runs through the first two winters after planting. Water deeply once or twice per week for the first 90 days, then taper to once every two weeks as roots anchor into the alluvial subsoil. Once established, most natives in Santee require no supplemental irrigation at all, dramatically cutting your annual water bill.

Try Our CalculatorSantee homeowners with exposed backyard slopes should apply a layer of gorilla hair mulch or coarse shredded bark before the December rain window to protect bare soil from erosion. Unlike smoother mulch products, fibrous mulch types knit together on slope faces and stay in place even during concentrated runoff. Apply at 3 to 4 inches deep and follow up by plugging in drought-tolerant groundcover starts through the mulch layer for long-term slope stabilization.

Delivering to Santee, California
Primary ZIP: 92071Santee residents adding decorative decomposed granite to front yards should prepare the sub-base carefully before spreading. Grade the area so it slopes away from the home's foundation at roughly 1 inch per 8 feet, then compact the native soil before laying weed barrier and DG. This simple grading step prevents water from pooling against the structure during Santee's occasional winter downpours and keeps your DG surface from washing toward the foundation.
