Defensible space should shape every material choice in Shasta Lake. Keep the first five feet around your home free of bark and wood chips, using three quarter inch crushed rock or river cobble instead, since embers land there first during a fire run. Save organic mulch for beds beyond that zone, and keep it raked flat rather than piled against siding, decks, or fence posts.

Shasta Lake ground is often shallow and rocky over decomposed granite, so bring in a topsoil and compost blend to create eight to twelve inches of workable depth in planting pockets. Native shrubs and manzanita relatives want good drainage, so avoid heavy amendment right at the crown and water deeply but infrequently once established.
