Landscaping fabric underneath is what makes rock a decade-long groundcover instead of a weedy mess in two summers, so budget for that if you have not laid it yet. Edging, whether metal, plastic, or stone, keeps rock from migrating into your grass or your neighbor's silt loam runoff path. For beds where you still want some organic matter for plants, pair rock walkways or borders with mulch in the actual planting beds instead of covering everything in stone.
Service area
Lay landscaping fabric before the rock goes down, always. Alexandria's silt loam is fine grained enough that without a barrier, rock slowly works its way into the soil over a few seasons and you end up with a muddy gray mess instead of a clean bed. Overlap fabric seams by at least six inches and pin them, since our seasonal rain will find any gap and push soil up through it eventually.
The biggest mistake we see locally is people spreading rock right up against tree trunks or shrub bases. It holds heat against bark during our humid zone 8b summers and traps moisture at the root flare during wet stretches, which invites rot. Leave a few inches of bare mulch or soil ring around any live plant, and save the solid rock coverage for open groundcover areas and foundation lines instead.
Because rock is a one time install rather than an annual refresh like mulch, it is worth ordering slightly more than your bare minimum calculation, especially along uneven grades near the Red River side of town where settling is more noticeable. A little extra depth in low spots now saves you a second delivery in a year. Mixing rock borders with mulched planting beds also cuts your total rock volume needed without losing the low maintenance look.
Alexandria sits on silt loam that drains slower than sandy soil, so beds near downspouts and low spots tend to stay soggy through the wet months before the Mar 8 last frost. Rock keeps that moisture off the soil surface and stops the mud tracking that silt loam is known for. Around foundations and along the Riverfront-style low maintenance beds a lot of Alex homeowners are going for, rock also handles our humid zone 8b summers without breaking down like organic mulch does. It will not feed your soil, so keep it away from beds where you actually want plants rooting into rich ground.
Landscape rock is stone chosen for how it looks as much as what it does. River rock is smooth and rounded, decomposed granite is fine and packs firm underfoot. Both are sold by the cubic yard for beds, borders, paths, and dry creek beds.
River rock stays loose and rolls, so it suits beds, borders, and drainage runs where it can sit in place. Decomposed granite compacts into a firm surface, so it suits paths, patios, and anywhere you will walk or roll a wheelbarrow.
Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
