Most Augusta jobs pairing sand also need paver base gravel underneath and edging to hold the whole system in place. If you are pouring a pool base or slab, a load of concrete mix ingredients or crushed stone typically shows up on the same delivery. Chip stone has become a common paver bedding alternative here too, worth asking about if pumping sand out from between pavers has been an issue.
Mason sand is not interchangeable with concrete sand, and mixing them up shows in your mortar joints. If you are repointing brick near an older Augusta structure, use mason sand specifically, it is finer and more uniform, which is what keeps the mortar workable long enough to tool it properly before it sets, especially in cooler spring temperatures.
A common mistake here is laying paver bedding sand too thick, over 1 inch invites shifting once frost heave starts working on it each winter. Keep bedding sand shallow and screeded flat, then compact pavers into it rather than building up a deep cushion. Given how hard Augusta frost cycles push on hardscape, thinner and well compacted beats thick and loose every time.
If you are also ordering paver base gravel, have both delivered in the same trip when possible, it saves a second driveway blockage and lets you sequence the job without waiting. Consider chip stone instead of sand for paver joints on high traffic areas, it resists the pumping and washout that sand joints can develop after a few Maine winters.
Augusta sits on sandy loam already, so drainage is rarely the problem here, the problem is precision. Mortar mixes and paver joints need a sand that is finer and more consistent than what you dig up in a yard near Old Fort Western. With frost reaching down hard by early October and not letting go until May, any hardscape base work needs to be finished before the ground starts working against you. This sand gives you the control that native soil cannot.
Masonry sand is washed and finely screened, the right choice for mortar work, paver joints, and sandboxes. Fill sand is coarser and less processed, better suited to leveling, bedding pipe, and filling low spots.
For pavers, screed a 1 inch sand bed over a compacted base rather than using sand to fix deep grade problems. A thin, even bed locks pavers in place. A thick one shifts underfoot.
Slightly damp sand spreads, screeds, and compacts far more easily than bone dry sand, which just flows back into your screed lines. Lightly wetting the pile before you work it saves real effort.
