One of the easiest customer service experiences I've had in a long time! Mulch Mound made it so simple. After putting it off for a while, I looked at the weather and knew I needed to get to mulching ASAP before the rain came if I didn't want to wait another week. I put my order in for the next day online and they came right at 9 AM. The employee who dropped off the mulch did a great job, putting it right on the tarp I laid out, she even made sure none of it got on the yard and double checked the truck bed to make sure it all came out. The mulch was exactly what I needed and arrived right on time.
Landscape fabric underneath is what actually makes this a one time install instead of a weed pulling chore every spring. Steel or aluminum edging keeps the rock from migrating into the lawn during heavy rain, which matters more here than in drier climates. If you have planting beds mixed in with the rock areas, keep a pile of mulch or compost on hand for those pockets since rock will not feed the soil the way organic material does.
Service area
In Beaumont's clay, do not skip the fabric barrier even if you are in a hurry. Clay holds moisture long enough that rock laid directly on soil will slowly sink and mix with mud within a couple of seasons, especially near downspouts where water concentrates. Fabric plus a 3 inch depth on the deep end of our range holds its line through our wet months and keeps the rock looking like a clean install instead of a muddy patch.
The biggest mistake we see locally is treating rock beds like mulch beds and expecting them to feed nearby plants. Rock traps falling leaves and pine needles instead of breaking them down, so plan on blowing or raking debris out a few times a year, more often near live oaks. If you want plants that need organic matter, keep them in a separate mulched bed rather than mixing them into the rock.
Because this is a one time install rather than an annual refresh, it pays to order a little heavier on depth up front, closer to 3 inches, rather than saving a half yard now. Thin rock beds show soil through in a year or two, especially after our heavier rain events wash the top layer around, and topping off later costs more in delivery trips than getting depth right the first time.
Beaumont sits at 16 feet of elevation on heavy clay that drains slowly, so standing water around foundations and downspouts is a real problem here, not a theoretical one. Rock laid over fabric sheds that water instead of holding it against your slab, which matters in a zone 9a climate where storms roll through most of the year. It also does not need annual topping like a mulch bed would, so it holds up through the long humid stretch between our December and February frosts. A lot of Beaumont yards use it along the house perimeter where grass struggles anyway.
Landscape rock is stone chosen for how it looks as much as what it does. River rock is smooth and rounded, decomposed granite is fine and packs firm underfoot. Both are sold by the cubic yard for beds, borders, paths, and dry creek beds.
River rock stays loose and rolls, so it suits beds, borders, and drainage runs where it can sit in place. Decomposed granite compacts into a firm surface, so it suits paths, patios, and anywhere you will walk or roll a wheelbarrow.
Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
