Most paver and patio jobs pull mason sand alongside crushed stone base or paver joint sand for the top layer, and pool installers often pair it with a compactable base material underneath. If you are mixing mortar for brick or block work, you will likely also need bagged cement on hand since we deliver the sand but not the binder.
Service area
Mason sand pulls double duty here, mortar mixing and pool bases, but do not use it interchangeably with concrete sand for structural mortar work, the grain is finer and changes the cure behavior. If you are mixing mortar in Beaumont's humidity, work in smaller batches, the fine grain holds moisture longer than coarser sand and can set up slower than you expect on a muggy afternoon.
A common mistake on paver jobs here is using mason sand as the bedding layer under pavers. It has largely been replaced by clean chip stone for that purpose because mason sand can pump up through joints over time on our clay soils as the ground shifts seasonally. Save mason sand for joint filling and mortar, and use a proper bedding stone underneath for a base that stays put.
If you are running both a mortar job and a paver project, order your mason sand and your bedding stone in the same delivery to save a trip charge, since both are sold by the yard and a single truck can usually carry both loads. Plan deliveries for spring or fall when hardscape work picks up here, yards book out less during peak summer heat.
Beaumont sits on heavy clay at just 16 feet of elevation, so water does not move through native soil quickly, which is exactly why mason sand shows up so often in local paver joints and pool base work, it gives a drainage layer the clay cannot. Masons here lean on it for mortar because its fine, uniform grain keeps the mix workable in our humid Gulf Coast heat instead of stiffening up too fast. With hardscape season running spring through fall here, most orders come in ahead of patio and paver jobs before the summer heat and rain really set in.
Masonry sand is washed and finely screened, the right choice for mortar work, paver joints, and sandboxes. Fill sand is coarser and less processed, better suited to leveling, bedding pipe, and filling low spots.
For pavers, screed a 1 inch sand bed over a compacted base rather than using sand to fix deep grade problems. A thin, even bed locks pavers in place. A thick one shifts underfoot.
Slightly damp sand spreads, screeds, and compacts far more easily than bone dry sand, which just flows back into your screed lines. Lightly wetting the pile before you work it saves real effort.
