    I used Mulch Mound to have 3 cubic yards of garden soil delivered. The process was easy and I love that I didn't have to call anyone. I placed my order online, picked my delivery date, laid out my tarp and the dirt was delivered. My delivery had to be pushed back, but I was kept informed via text, which was great. So why not 5 stars? The description of garden soil on the website is "A balanced mix of topsoil and organic amendments ready for raised beds, flower gardens, and new planting areas. Good drainage, solid nutrients, easy to work with." What I got was more like fill dirt. It had a lot of gravel, a lot of clay, and random trash mixed in. I didn't test the soil to see if it actually had "amendments" because I already have compost and alpaca manure ready to add, but if I'd known the quality of the dirt was going to be the same as the bagged dirt I bought last year, I probably would have gotten 2 yards of top soil and a yard of leaf compost for better quality, especially since the leaf compost is cheaper. Photo of my mountain of dirt and just some of the trash I found in it.

Centralia silt loam turns soft and pumping under load whenever it is saturated, and without a barrier your gravel will migrate down into the mud within a couple of wet seasons. A non woven geotextile costs very little compared to a second load of rock. Roll it out with a generous overlap at the seams and pin it before you dump the first wheelbarrow.

    Grade before you place stone. Every gravel surface in this valley should have a visible slope, even a subtle one, so that 48 inches of annual rain has a direction to travel. Aim for about a quarter inch of fall per foot away from foundations and toward a swale or drain. Stone placed on a flat pad simply holds water, and the surface stays soft and mossy all winter no matter how much rock you add.

    Match the rock to the job rather than to the photo you liked. Round river rock looks beautiful in a dry creek bed but rolls underfoot and will not compact, so it fails on paths and driveways. Crushed minus with angular edges and fines locks tight and holds a surface. Clean drain rock with no fines is what you want inside a French drain, where fines would clog the voids and stop water moving.

Simply digging a rock filled trench with no outlet just creates an underground reservoir that fills up in December.
