For mortar mixing or small paver joint work, the volume needed is much smaller, so figure your job by area first and let that guide the order.

Sand pairs naturally with paver base gravel for a two layer hardscape build, and with polymeric sand or joint sand for the final finish between pavers. If you are working on a pool base or mortar mix, having crushed stone or block on hand at the same time keeps the job moving without a second delivery.
If you are bedding pavers, know that finely screened mason sand is increasingly being swapped out for clean chip stone in this application, because sand can pump or wash out under freeze thaw cycles, and Conneaut sees real winter cycling given its zone 6b climate and lake effect moisture. If your project is a paver patio and not mortar or a pool base, ask about chip stone before you commit to a full sand order.
Time hardscape and mortar work between your last frost around April 15 and first frost around October 20, since sand work done outside that window risks the material not setting or bonding as intended in cold, damp conditions. Late spring and early fall tend to offer the most workable weather for mixing mortar outdoors here.
Order your full estimated yardage at once rather than in small batches, since sand delivered in one drop keeps its uniform screening consistent for mortar color and texture throughout the job. Mixing sand from different batches, or different suppliers, can lead to visible inconsistency in a mortar joint once it cures.
Conneaut sits on silt loam soil, which drains slower and holds more moisture than sandy ground, so a clean layer of screened sand becomes important wherever you need a stable, well drained base, like under a paver patio near the harbor or around a pool deck. Because the native soil here is fine and can get soft when wet, this sand gives you a working surface that will not shift the way native silt loam does after a spring rain. It is also the material masons reach for when mixing mortar for stonework or brick, since its uniform grain keeps the mix workable in both the humid summer months and the cooler stretches leading into fall.
Masonry sand is washed and finely screened, the right choice for mortar work, paver joints, and sandboxes. Fill sand is coarser and less processed, better suited to leveling, bedding pipe, and filling low spots.
For pavers, screed a 1 inch sand bed over a compacted base rather than using sand to fix deep grade problems. A thin, even bed locks pavers in place. A thick one shifts underfoot.
Slightly damp sand spreads, screeds, and compacts far more easily than bone dry sand, which just flows back into your screed lines. Lightly wetting the pile before you work it saves real effort.
