Compost pairs well with a topsoil blend if you are building up a new bed from scratch, or with mulch on top once the compost is worked in, since the mulch holds moisture and keeps the compost from drying out. If you are seeding a lawn after top dressing, having some extra topsoil on hand for low spots is worth considering at the same time.
