Mason sand is usually just one layer of the job. Most Durant customers pair it with paver base or crushed stone underneath and pavers or natural stone on top, and some add polymeric sand separately for the finished joints. If you are mixing mortar for brick or block work, you will also want cement on hand before the load arrives.
Mason sand is finer and more uniform than concrete sand, which is exactly why it works for mortar but is a poor choice for structural bedding under heavy pavers. If your project is a paver patio rather than mortar work, ask about chip stone instead, since it locks together and will not pump or wash out from underneath the pavers the way sand can after a heavy Oklahoma downpour.
A common mistake is ordering mason sand for paver joints and expecting it to stay put through a full Durant summer of thunderstorms. Plain sand in joints migrates and washes out over a season or two. Polymeric sand, swept in dry and activated with water, holds up far better long term and is worth the extra step if the patio gets regular rain exposure.
Order mortar sand and any bedding or joint stone together on the same delivery when possible, since running a second truck out later for a small top off costs more in fuel and time than sizing the load correctly the first time. If you are unsure how much mortar mixing a job will need, talk to your mason before ordering, since mix ratios vary by project.
Durant sits on clay loam, which holds water and gets sticky when wet, so a lot of hardscape and paver projects here need a sand layer to break up that moisture retention under the base. Mason sand also gets used for mortar on the stone and brick work common around the older parts of town. With Lake Texoma nearby, pool deck and boat dock adjacent projects come up often, and this finer sand is what keeps mortar workable in those jobs. Zone 8a summers get hot enough that sand work is best scheduled before the heat makes concrete and mortar set too fast to finish clean.
Masonry sand is washed and finely screened, the right choice for mortar work, paver joints, and sandboxes. Fill sand is coarser and less processed, better suited to leveling, bedding pipe, and filling low spots.
For pavers, screed a 1 inch sand bed over a compacted base rather than using sand to fix deep grade problems. A thin, even bed locks pavers in place. A thick one shifts underfoot.
Slightly damp sand spreads, screeds, and compacts far more easily than bone dry sand, which just flows back into your screed lines. Lightly wetting the pile before you work it saves real effort.
