Fill dirt is a structural base, not a finish, so most Evans jobs cap it with a few inches of topsoil once the fill is compacted and settled. Fill dirt is not something you plant into directly. It's subsoil, low in organic matter and structure, so cap any area that needs grass or landscaping with 4 to 6 inches of real topsoil once the fill has settled. Skipping the cap is a common mistake that leaves you with patchy grass or plants that never establish, even in a decent growing zone like 8b.

If you're backfilling around a pool or foundation, order fill dirt and topsoil as separate deliveries rather than trying to blend them yourself. It's more efficient to compact the structural fill fully first, then bring in the finish topsoil once grade is set. This also means you're not paying to compact material that has organic content in it, which never packs down as reliably as clean subsoil.
Grading and Filling in Evans

Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
