How Much Material Do I Need?
Two to three inches is right for decorative stone beds, while drainage swales and dry creek beds usually want four to six inches of river rock. Paver and walkway bases need four to six inches of compacted crushed limestone under Fishers silt loam.

What is a yard?
A yard is approximately 27 cubic feet. As a general guideline, one yard of material can cover an area of about 100-160 square feet at a 2-3 inch depth.

I used Mulch Mound to have 3 cubic yards of garden soil delivered. The process was easy and I love that I didn't have to call anyone. I placed my order online, picked my delivery date, laid out my tarp and the dirt was delivered. My delivery had to be pushed back, but I was kept informed via text, which was great. So why not 5 stars? The description of garden soil on the website is "A balanced mix of topsoil and organic amendments ready for raised beds, flower gardens, and new planting areas. Good drainage, solid nutrients, easy to work with." What I got was more like fill dirt. It had a lot of gravel, a lot of clay, and random trash mixed in. I didn't test the soil to see if it actually had "amendments" because I already have compost and alpaca manure ready to add, but if I'd known the quality of the dirt was going to be the same as the bagged dirt I bought last year, I probably would have gotten 2 yards of top soil and a yard of leaf compost for better quality, especially since the leaf compost is cheaper. Photo of my mountain of dirt and just some of the trash I found in it.

Really appreciate the care and follow thru that this company had with our order. A hiccup came up but they were quick to respond and address all concerns, which made our garden day a success! Thank you for your prompt care.
Measure your area in feet, multiply length by width, then multiply by your depth in inches and divide by 324 for cubic yards. Stone does not fluff or settle much, so the math is more reliable than it is with mulch. For irregular dry creek beds common in Fishers yards, measure the average width along several points rather than the widest spot.
Complete Your Outdoor Stone Project
Add woven landscape fabric underneath and steel or paver edging around the perimeter so stone stays where you put it during heavy Fishers rain. Screened topsoil is useful for shaping the grade before the stone goes down.
Shape the grade before you place a single stone. Water follows the contour of the silt loam beneath, not the surface of your rock, so a dry creek bed that is level in the middle will hold standing water and breed mosquitoes through a humid Fishers July. Dig a shallow channel with a consistent fall toward your outlet, compact it, then lay fabric and stone. The visual effect improves too.
Mulch Mound Pro Tip
Overlap your landscape fabric by at least six inches at every seam and pin it every two feet. Fishers freeze and thaw cycles lift fabric edges over the winter, and once a gap opens, silt works down into the stone and weeds root in it. Pins along the perimeter matter most, especially where the bed meets turf and the mower edge tugs at the fabric.
Mulch Mound Pro Tip
Rinse decorative stone after installation. Most crushed and river material carries a fine dust that dulls the color, and a good hose down brings out the tones that made you choose it. Do this in Fishers on a day the beds can drain, and repeat once a year in early spring after the winter grit and road salt have washed in from drives and walks.
The Unique Landscape of Fishers
Fishers gets 43 inches of rain a year and much of it arrives in fast spring and summer downpours that overwhelm silt loam and run off across yards. Decorative and functional stone gives that water somewhere to go without carrying your landscape with it. Along downspouts, at the base of slopes, and in the swales that run between many Fishers subdivision lots, stone stays put where mulch would float away. It also holds up through the freeze and thaw cycles between the October 14 first frost and the April 22 last frost, which chew through organic materials in a single season. For homeowners tired of remulching wet trouble spots every spring, stone is the permanent answer.

Answer
What stone works best for a downspout drainage area in Fishers?
One to three inch river rock is the standard choice because it is heavy enough to stay in place during the intense summer storms Fishers gets and large enough that water flows through rather than pooling. Lay landscape fabric under it so the silt loam beneath does not migrate up. A dry creek bed of river rock handles a downspout better than any bed of mulch.
Answer
Will landscape stone get too hot next to my foundation plantings?
It does hold heat, and in a Fishers August a light colored stone bed on a south facing wall can push soil temperatures noticeably higher than mulch. That is fine for junipers, sedum, and ornamental grasses but hard on hydrangeas and hostas. Match the plant to the exposure or stick with mulch on hot south and west foundations.
Answer
How deep should stone go so weeds do not come through?
Two to three inches over quality woven landscape fabric is the working minimum, and three inches is better in Fishers because windblown silt settles into the gaps and creates a seedbed. Even then, plan on a spring preemergent application. Stone does not stop weeds forever, it just slows them considerably.
Answer
Does stone hold up better than mulch through Indiana winters?
Yes. Fishers cycles through freeze and thaw repeatedly from mid October through late April, and that cycling accelerates the breakdown of organic mulch while leaving stone essentially unchanged. You may need to rake stone back into place after heavy snowmelt or plow work along drives, but you are not replacing it annually.
Answer
How much does a yard of stone weigh and can my driveway handle it?
A cubic yard of most landscape stone runs roughly 2,500 to 2,800 pounds, considerably heavier than mulch. Standard residential concrete drives in Fishers handle a typical delivery fine, but if your driveway is newly poured or asphalt softened by summer heat, ask us to drop on plywood or a designated pad instead.
Answer
What should I use as a base for a paver patio here?
Crushed limestone base compacted in lifts is the standard in central Indiana, typically four to six inches deep for a patio and more for a driveway. The depth matters in Fishers because silt loam subgrade holds water and heaves during winter freeze and thaw. A properly compacted stone base is what keeps pavers from shifting by year three.
Answer
Can I put stone over the top of my existing mulch?
It is not a good idea. The mulch keeps decomposing underneath and the stone sinks into the resulting void, leaving an uneven bed within a year or two. Rake out the old mulch, level the silt loam, install fabric, then place your stone. The extra afternoon of work saves you a redo.
Answer
Is there a stone yard near Fishers?
Lining a downspout run or a drainage swale with crushed stone usually means either hauling it yourself from a stone yard or having it delivered to the spot. Mulch Mound is the delivery option, so there is no quarry trip, and limestone or crushed stone gets dropped right where Fishers spring downpours need it, ready to spread.
