Landscape fabric underneath is what turns this into the decade-long groundcover it is meant to be, since skipping it means weeds working through sandy loam within a season or two. Steel or aluminum edging keeps the stone from migrating into St. Augustine or centipede lawns, which is common around here. A load of soil or mulch for the planting beds nearby rounds out most rock projects in one delivery instead of two.
