One of the easiest customer service experiences I've had in a long time! Mulch Mound made it so simple. After putting it off for a while, I looked at the weather and knew I needed to get to mulching ASAP before the rain came if I didn't want to wait another week. I put my order in for the next day online and they came right at 9 AM. The employee who dropped off the mulch did a great job, putting it right on the tarp I laid out, she even made sure none of it got on the yard and double checked the truck bed to make sure it all came out. The mulch was exactly what I needed and arrived right on time.

We have always spread our own mulch for the past 24 years. This was our first time with the Mulch Mound - things I liked: they have online ordering and provide a digital receipt which means you can remember how much you ordered (I always forget for the next year!), they were on time, they were able to deliver in 48 hours, they were generous with the portion (we got 9 yards and it felt like a FULL nine yards!), the driver was polite! We have ordered from reputable places, and there is always a little trash in the mulch. The mulch we recv'd from Mulch Mound had barely any... we were pleasant surprised!!! Color was great! Mulch Mound Pro Tip
Mason sand is noticeably finer than concrete sand, which is exactly why it works for mortar but is a poor substitute for paver bedding. If you are setting pavers, ask about clean chip stone instead. Sand bedding under pavers has largely fallen out of favor because it pumps and washes out over time, especially in areas with Kannapolis's clay soil pushing groundwater sideways after storms.
Mulch Mound Pro Tip
A common mistake is mixing mortar sand on wet ground or right after a rain event when the red clay underneath is saturated. Excess moisture in the base changes your mortar's water ratio and weakens the cure. Wait for a dry stretch, especially in spring when Kannapolis gets its heaviest rain, and keep the sand pile covered with a tarp between work sessions.
Mulch Mound Pro Tip
Order mason sand and your paver base stone or mortar mix in the same delivery when possible. Combining loads cuts down on truck trips across your yard, which matters if your soil is already compacted red clay that does not need extra traffic. It also means less time coordinating separate deliveries around a hardscape schedule that is already tight from spring through fall.
Working With Sand in Kannapolis
Kannapolis sits on red clay that drains slowly and holds water after a spring downturn, which is exactly why sand belongs in a separate, well drained layer under pavers and never mixed into the native clay hoping it will loosen up. Hardscape work here runs spring through fall, and mason sand mixed with mortar needs dry, mild conditions to cure right, so plan mortar work outside the wettest stretches before the Apr 7 last frost. For paver joints and pool bases, the sand layer has to sit on top of compacted base, not on clay, or it will settle unevenly once the ground freezes and thaws again near Nov 1.
Masonry vs Fill Sand
Masonry sand is washed and finely screened, the right choice for mortar work, paver joints, and sandboxes. Fill sand is coarser and less processed, better suited to leveling, bedding pipe, and filling low spots.
Bedding and Leveling
For pavers, screed a 1 inch sand bed over a compacted base rather than using sand to fix deep grade problems. A thin, even bed locks pavers in place. A thick one shifts underfoot.
Working With Moisture
Slightly damp sand spreads, screeds, and compacts far more easily than bone dry sand, which just flows back into your screed lines. Lightly wetting the pile before you work it saves real effort.
