Complete Your Outdoor Project
Most fill dirt jobs finish with a few inches of topsoil capping the fill, especially if grass or landscaping goes on top since fill dirt alone will not support root growth. Some Killeen customers also order crushed base material for a driveway or parking pad built up on the new grade. If drainage was the original problem, gravel for a French drain alongside the filled area is worth considering while the ground is already open.

Areas we deliver fill dirt in Killeen, Texas
Killeen's clay caliche does not compact evenly on its own, so do not just dump fill dirt in one thick layer and call it done. Spread it in 6 to 8 inch lifts and compact each one before adding the next, especially around foundations and pool walls where settling later means cracked concrete or sunken pavers. A plate compactor rental for a weekend is worth it compared to redoing the grade in two years.
The most common mistake we see locally is skipping the topsoil cap because the fill dirt looks like it could grow grass. It cannot. Fill dirt is subsoil, low in organic matter and often full of the same caliche clumps as our native ground, so anything planted directly in it will struggle. Budget for 2 to 4 inches of topsoil on top wherever the area needs to support turf or beds.
If you are raising a large area, order slightly more than your calculated total since compaction reduces volume by roughly 10 to 15 percent once each lift is packed down. It is cheaper to have a little extra on site than to schedule a second small delivery for the last few square feet, especially with Fort Cavazos area traffic sometimes adding time to repeat trips.
Grading and Filling in Killeen
Killeen's clay caliche base holds water in low spots and turns to a mess after the spring rains, which is why so many backyards near Fort Cavazos and the newer subdivisions end up with soggy corners or sunken areas along the foundation. Fill dirt lets you build that ground up above grade so water moves away from the house instead of sitting on it. Because our native soil compacts hard once it dries, contractors and homeowners here often bring in fill for pool backfill and drainage correction rather than fighting the caliche itself. It is not a growing medium, so plan on topsoil over the top wherever grass or beds are going in.
What Clean Fill Is
Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill Dirt vs Topsoil
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Compact in Lifts
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
