One cubic yard of fill dirt covers about 54 square feet at a 6 inch depth, so a 10 by 10 foot low spot needing 6 inches runs close to 2 cubic yards, and deeper fills or larger areas scale up from there. Since fill dirt is sold and delivered by the cubic yard, measure your area and target depth first, then work backward to yardage rather than guessing.

Most fill dirt jobs in Laurinburg finish with a topsoil cap once the grade is set, especially if grass, beds, or sod are going back in over the fill. Some pool and foundation jobs also call in gravel or crushed stone for drainage layers underneath before the fill goes in. If you're not sure what your project needs on top, we can talk through it when you place the order.
Service area
Fill dirt has to go down in 6 to 8 inch lifts, each one compacted before the next goes on top, or you'll be watching your yard sink for two or three years as it settles on its own. In Laurinburg's sandy loam, a hand tamper works for small backfill spots, but anything larger than a pool deck deserves a rented plate compactor. Skipping this step is the single most common reason people call us back for a second load.
Don't plant or seed directly into fill dirt, it's subsoil, not a growing medium, and it lacks the organic content and structure roots need. Cap finished grade with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil before anything goes in the ground. This matters more in Laurinburg than in heavier clay areas because the sandy loam base already drains fast, so a thin or skipped topsoil cap leaves grass struggling by midsummer.
If you're backfilling around a foundation or pool wall, order slightly more than your calculated volume since compaction reduces the finished depth by 10 to 20 percent as material settles into the lifts. It's cheaper to have a little extra fill dirt sitting off to the side than to schedule a second small delivery for the last foot of a trench. Extra material also comes in handy for touch up grading later in the season.
Laurinburg sits at 218 feet with sandy loam soil that drains well but doesn't hold a compacted grade on its own, especially around pool decks and foundation backfill where the ground gets disturbed. That native sand also means low spots in yards near the John Blue House and older neighborhoods tend to hold water after heavy rain until they're built up properly. Fill dirt gives you a stable subsoil base for those regrades and backfills, not something meant to grow in. Cap it with topsoil once the grade is set and grass or beds go in fine in this zone 8a climate.
Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
