Most fill jobs finish with a few inches of topsoil on top if anything is going to grow there, since fill dirt is structural, not a growing medium. A hand tamper or plate compactor helps if you're doing lifts yourself. Some customers also grab mulch afterward for the beds that go in once grade is set.
Service area
Don't dump fill dirt in one deep pour. Place it in 6 to 8 inch lifts and compact each layer before adding the next, especially with Lima's silt loam base, which holds water and settles unevenly if it's not compacted as you go. Skipping this step is the number one reason people end up with a sunken patch a year later, right where the fill was thickest.
Fill dirt is not for planting into directly. Once you've built up grade and compacted it, cap the top with 4 to 6 inches of actual topsoil before seeding or laying sod. People who skip this step end up with patchy grass because subsoil lacks the organic matter and structure that roots need.
If you're filling a large low area, order in one delivery rather than multiple smaller ones. It's easier to manage lift compaction with a full pile on site than to guess at timing between partial loads, and consistent material from one load compacts more predictably than mixed batches.
Lima sits on silt loam that compacts fine but drains slowly, so a lot of yards here have low corners that stay soft into May. Fill dirt is what people bring in to raise that ground before it becomes a mud problem every spring melt. It also shows up around new foundations and pool decks where the excavated soil isn't enough to bring grade back up. This isn't topsoil, so if grass or beds go on top, plan to cap it.
Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
