Mason sand pairs with paver base stone and edging on hardscape jobs, and with portland cement and lime if you are mixing mortar on site. A lot of Mobile crews are shifting bedding layers over to clean chip stone since it drains better and will not pump the way sand can in wet, humid ground, worth asking about if you are building a patio near the bay.

Mason sand and concrete sand look similar in a pile but behave very differently once wet. Mason sand's finer, more uniform grain is what makes mortar workable long enough to set brick or block before it stiffens in Mobile's heat and humidity. If you grab the wrong bag or wrong load for a mortar mix, you will fight a gritty, crumbly batch that will not hold a joint line.
