One of the easiest customer service experiences I've had in a long time! Mulch Mound made it so simple. After putting it off for a while, I looked at the weather and knew I needed to get to mulching ASAP before the rain came if I didn't want to wait another week. I put my order in for the next day online and they came right at 9 AM. The employee who dropped off the mulch did a great job, putting it right on the tarp I laid out, she even made sure none of it got on the yard and double checked the truck bed to make sure it all came out. The mulch was exactly what I needed and arrived right on time.
Most fill jobs in New Braunfels get capped with a few inches of topsoil once the grade is set, especially if sod or a garden bed is going in on top. If the finished area needs drainage work, a layer of crushed base or gravel underneath a paved or high traffic section pairs well with the fill below it. Think in layers, fill for structure, topsoil for growth, mulch or gravel for the finished surface.
Service area
Never dump fill dirt in one deep layer and call it done. Place it in 6 to 8 inch lifts and compact each one with a plate compactor or hand tamper before adding the next. Skip this step on New Braunfels clay loam and you will watch the fill settle unevenly for a year or two, cracking any patio, walkway, or shed pad you built on top of it too soon.
Fill dirt is not a growing medium, it has no organic matter and compacts too hard for roots. If grass, beds, or trees are going in the finished area, cap the compacted fill with 4 to 6 inches of actual topsoil before planting. Skipping the cap is the most common mistake we see, people plant straight into fill and wonder why nothing takes.
Order slightly more than your calculated volume, since fill compacts down 10 to 20 percent once tamped, and running short mid job means a second delivery and a visible seam where the two loads meet. If you are also topping with soil or mulch, plan the fill delivery first and let it settle a few days before capping, especially with New Braunfels clay underneath holding moisture longer after rain.
New Braunfels sits on clay loam that holds water and swells when it is wet, which is exactly why so many yards here have drainage problems near foundations, pools, and low fence lines. Fill dirt gives you a stable base to correct grade before that clay ever gets involved, so water moves away from the house instead of pooling against it. With river frontage and flood-prone low areas common around here, raising a build pad above grade before construction or a pool install is standard practice, not overkill. This is structural material, so it does the heavy lifting before topsoil or sod finishes the job.
Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
