For bed work, where you want 2 to 3 inches tilled in, plan on that same yard covering roughly 108 to 160 square feet. Measure the actual area first, lawns and beds rarely need the same depth on the same property.

One of the easiest customer service experiences I've had in a long time! Mulch Mound made it so simple. After putting it off for a while, I looked at the weather and knew I needed to get to mulching ASAP before the rain came if I didn't want to wait another week. I put my order in for the next day online and they came right at 9 AM. The employee who dropped off the mulch did a great job, putting it right on the tarp I laid out, she even made sure none of it got on the yard and double checked the truck bed to make sure it all came out. The mulch was exactly what I needed and arrived right on time.
Compost pairs well with a topsoil blend if you're rebuilding a bare patch, or with mulch on top once beds are amended, since mulch holds moisture in and keeps the compost from washing during heavy rain. A lot of Newport News customers order both in the same delivery, one to build the soil and one to protect it.
Service area
In sandy clay soil like most of Newport News has, compost works best tilled into the top 4 to 6 inches rather than just laid on the surface and left. Surface application on clay-heavy patches barely penetrates before it dries into a crust. Till it in, especially before spring planting, so the organic matter actually mixes with the mineral soil instead of sitting on top like a mulch layer.
The most common mistake is applying too much at once thinking it'll speed up results. Compost piled on thick, past 3 inches in beds or more than 1 inch on lawns, can actually tie up nitrogen as it continues breaking down, leaving plants yellow and hungry. Thin layers worked in more than once a year beat one heavy application every time.
Fall application ahead of the Nov 1 frost gives compost a couple months to integrate into the soil before winter dormancy, so by the time zone 8a's spring planting window opens in April, the ground is already improved. Spring works too if you're prepping new beds, just till it in early rather than waiting until planting day.
Sandy clay is the default soil across most of Newport News, and it drains oddly, either too fast through the sandy pockets or too slow where clay dominates. Compost worked into the top few inches gives that soil something to hold onto, better water retention where it drains fast, better aeration where it's dense. With zone 8a winters and a frost window that runs November to mid April, fall applications have time to break down and integrate before spring planting starts. It's a common fix for the tired lawns and struggling beds you see near older neighborhoods close to the water.
Finished compost is organic matter that has fully broken down into a dark, crumbly material with an earthy smell. It feeds soil life, improves structure, and helps beds hold water without staying soggy.
Work 1 to 2 inches into new beds, or topdress lawns with a quarter to half inch and rake it in. More is not better. Too thick a layer can smother roots instead of feeding them.
Spring and fall are both good windows. Spring applications feed the growing season ahead, and fall applications break down over winter so beds are ready at first thaw.
