Multiply square feet by depth in inches and divide by 324 for cubic yards. Bulk soil settles 15 to 20 percent after our first heavy rain, so order a bit extra rather than paying for a second small delivery.

My new construction yard is pure sand. How much topsoil do I need?

For a functional lawn over stripped North Charleston building sand, aim for 4 to 6 inches of screened topsoil, which is about 12 to 18 cubic yards per 1,000 square feet. If that is out of budget, 2 inches of compost tilled into the existing 4 inches of sand gets you most of the benefit for less money and holds up better through our rainy summers.

What is the difference between fill dirt and topsoil, and which do I need?

Fill dirt is subsoil used for volume, like raising a low spot in a flat North Charleston backyard that ponds after a downpour. Topsoil is screened and has organic matter for growing. On low lying lots we often deliver both, fill dirt for the bulk of the grade change and 4 inches of topsoil capping it so grass will actually root.

When is the best time to add soil and start a garden here?

Our last frost averages March 10, so February is prime time to deliver soil and build beds before spring planting. You also get a genuine fall season, since the first frost holds off until around November 30, giving you time for a September soil refresh and a cool season crop of collards, lettuce, and carrots.

Does the sandy soil in North Charleston need lime?

Often yes. Sandy loam here tends to run acidic and leaches calcium quickly with 52 inches of rain flushing through it every year. Send a sample to Clemson Extension before you guess, because azaleas and blueberries want that acidity while vegetables and centipede lawns have very different targets. Lime is cheap, but overliming sandy soil is easy to do and hard to undo.

How deep should raised beds be in this climate?

Twelve inches of good garden mix is plenty for most vegetables in North Charleston, and the fast draining sandy loam below acts as a natural drainage layer. Raised beds are especially smart on our flat, low elevation lots because they lift roots above water that sits after heavy rain. A 4 by 8 bed at 12 inches takes about 1.2 cubic yards.

Will heavy summer rain wash my new soil away?

It can, especially on freshly graded areas before anything roots in. Spread soil, rake it smooth, then seed, sod, or mulch within a day or two. On any slope, straw or an erosion blanket buys you the two weeks you need. Try to avoid major soil work right before a tropical system is forecast.

Can I just till compost into my existing sand instead of buying topsoil?

For beds, absolutely, and it is often the better move. Work 2 to 3 inches of compost into the top 6 to 8 inches of North Charleston sandy loam and you get real structure and water holding capacity rather than a shallow layer sitting on sand. For lawns and grade corrections where you need volume, screened topsoil is still the right call.

Do not spread soil over compacted new construction subsoil without breaking it up first. Builder traffic in North Charleston developments leaves a hardpan that water cannot cross, and a nice 4 inch topsoil layer on top of it turns into a bathtub during our 52 inches of annual rain. Rip or till the existing grade 4 to 6 inches deep, then blend the new soil into that loosened layer so roots and water can move down freely.

Get a soil test through Clemson Extension before you invest in amendments. North Charleston yards vary wildly, from acidic sandy loam in older neighborhoods to alkaline pockets where builders mixed in shell and construction debris. A test costs a few dollars and tells you whether your camellias are struggling from pH, from a lack of organic matter, or simply from soil that drains too fast to hold the fertilizer you keep applying.

Think about drainage before you think about grade. At about 39 feet above sea level with a high water table, North Charleston yards can perch water just below the surface after a storm. Before adding soil, watch where water sits 24 hours after a heavy rain and shape your new grade to move that water toward a swale or the street.
