One cubic yard of fill dirt covers roughly 54 square feet at a 6 inch depth, and most structural fill jobs here call for 6 to 12 inches depending on how deep the low spot or foundation gap is. Measure the area you're filling in square feet, decide your target depth, and figure your yardage from there, then round up since compaction will settle the material down some. Fill dirt is a base, not a finish, so most jobs here cap it with a few inches of topsoil once the grade is set and compacted, especially anywhere sod or plants are going in. If you're backfilling around a pool deck or patio, a layer of compactable base material on top of the fill helps before pavers or concrete go down. We can deliver both in the same trip if you're stacking materials for one project.

North Port's sandy native soil doesn't give fill dirt much to grip onto if you dump it in one thick pile and walk away. Place it in 6 to 8 inch lifts and compact each one with a plate compactor or hand tamper before adding the next layer. Skipping this step is the number one reason people call us back a year later asking why their pool deck or shed pad has sunk several inches in one corner.
Fill dirt is not a growing medium, it's subsoil screened of debris, so nothing roots well in it directly. If any part of the filled area will have grass, plants, or sod, cap the compacted fill with 4 to 6 inches of actual topsoil before you plant. People skip this in a rush to finish and end up replacing dead sod within a season.
If you're leveling a large lot or filling around a new pool, it's worth ordering fill dirt and topsoil together rather than in separate deliveries, since you'll need both anyway and it saves a second delivery fee and a second day of waiting around. Structural fill for the bulk of the depth, topsoil only where something needs to grow, keeps the job efficient without wasting either material.
North Port sits at about 20 feet of elevation on sandy soil that drains fast but doesn't hold a grade well once it's disturbed, which is why so many yards here develop low spots and soggy corners near driveways and pool decks. Fill dirt gives you a structural base to correct that, not something meant to grow in. With the area's rapid new construction, a lot of the fill work we deliver for is pool installs, shed pads, and lots being leveled before sod or landscaping goes in. It compacts differently than the native sand, so it needs to go down in controlled lifts rather than dumped and left.
Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
