Landscape fabric underneath is what makes this a decade long groundcover instead of a rock covered weed patch, so plan on it before delivery day. Edging, whether steel or paver, keeps the rock from migrating into the lawn during Norton Shores' wetter spring months. Many customers pair a rock bed near the foundation with mulch in the planting beds further out, using rock where they want permanence and mulch where they want soil to stay fed.
Service area
Lay landscape fabric before the rock goes down, not after, and overlap seams by at least six inches since Norton Shores' sandy loam shifts enough with freeze thaw cycles to open gaps in loose fabric over a season or two. Skipping fabric means grass and dune grass runners will work up through the rock within a year or two, especially near lawn edges where roots are aggressive.
The biggest mistake we see locally is installing rock right up against tree trunks or shrub bases. Rock holds heat and reflects it back, which can stress bark and roots during Norton Shores' warmer July and August stretches. Leave a few inches of mulch or bare soil buffer around any live plant, and reserve the rock for open groundcover areas and hardscape edges instead.
Because rock traps organic debris instead of breaking it down, plan on a leaf blower pass or two each fall, especially if you are near tree cover, rather than expecting the bed to self clean. Pair rock with mulch in your actual planting beds and save it for foundations, drainage paths, and downspout aprons where permanence matters more than soil health, that split gets you the best of both without overpaying for either material where it is not needed.
Norton Shores sits on sandy loam that already drains well, so rock does not sit in standing water the way it can in heavier clay soils inland. With zone 6b winters and freeze thaw cycles running roughly mid October to mid May, rock stays put where mulch would heave or wash out along slopes near the dunes. It is a common choice here around foundations and downspouts, areas where lakeshore homes fight erosion from wind driven rain. Just know it will trap the oak and pine needle litter that blows in off nearby wooded lots, so it is not the right call next to plantings that want organic matter worked into the soil.
Landscape rock is stone chosen for how it looks as much as what it does. River rock is smooth and rounded, decomposed granite is fine and packs firm underfoot. Both are sold by the cubic yard for beds, borders, paths, and dry creek beds.
River rock stays loose and rolls, so it suits beds, borders, and drainage runs where it can sit in place. Decomposed granite compacts into a firm surface, so it suits paths, patios, and anywhere you will walk or roll a wheelbarrow.
Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
