Most Norwalk customers lay landscape fabric before the rock goes down, which keeps silt loam from working its way up through the stone over time. Steel or aluminum edging holds a clean line against turf, and a few cubic yards of mulch nearby for planting islands within the rock bed gives contrast without fighting the rock for moisture.

Lay landscape fabric before the rock, not after, and overlap seams by at least 6 inches since Norwalk's silt loam is fine grained enough to migrate up through gaps within a couple seasons. Skip fabric only if you plan to rake and refresh the bed regularly. Pin the fabric down every few feet, because freeze thaw cycles through the winter will lift loose edges and expose bare fabric by spring.
The biggest mistake we see locally is piling rock against wood siding or fence posts without a gap. Moisture from silt loam holds against the base of rock beds longer than people expect, and untreated wood in contact with damp stone rots faster than it would in open soil. Leave an inch of clearance and consider a metal or vinyl transition strip anywhere rock meets a structure.
Order slightly more than your calculated total if you're bordering a bed near mature maples, since leaf litter compresses into the top layer and makes the rock look thinner by the second fall. A little extra depth up front means you won't need a follow up delivery for years. Pairing a lighter gray stone with darker mulch in adjacent beds also helps distinguish planting zones without extra edging.

Norwalk's silt loam holds water well, which is great for lawns but murder on organic mulch that breaks down fast in a wet bed. Rock over fabric shrugs off that moisture cycle and the freeze thaw swings between our Apr 15 last frost and Oct 30 first frost without heaving or washing out. It works especially well against foundations and around downspouts where standing water is common after a Maple City spring rain. Just know it will trap maple leaves come fall, so beds near mature trees need occasional blowing out.

Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
