A quick moisture meter reading below 20 percent tells you the wood is ready, if you don't have one, two split pieces that knock together with a sharp crack rather than a dull thud are usually good to burn.
Order your firewood in late summer or early fall, well before the October 21 average first frost, since seasoned wood supply tightens once temperatures drop and everyone along the Wasatch Front starts calling at once. Ordering early also gives any slightly under seasoned splits extra weeks of Orem's dry air to finish curing before you need them.
Orem sits at 4,767 feet with a heating season that runs from mid October frost through late April, meaning wood stoves and fireplaces often see five to six months of regular use. At this elevation the air is dry, which is actually good news for burning, but it means green or half seasoned wood will still hiss and smoke rather than throw real heat.
