Compost pairs well with a topsoil blend if you're building a new bed from scratch in Shreveport's clay, since straight compost alone isn't a planting medium. It also works alongside mulch, compost goes down first to feed the soil and mulch goes on top to hold moisture and block weeds. If you're renovating a lawn, a load of compost for topdressing plus grass seed timed for fall is a solid combination.
Service area
In Shreveport's clay loam, don't till compost in too deep, 2 to 3 inches worked into the top 6 to 8 inches of soil is the sweet spot. Going deeper just buries organic matter below where most root activity happens and does little for drainage. If you're prepping a new bed, spread the compost, till it in, then let the bed sit a week or two before planting so the soil settles and doesn't leave root balls sitting in an air pocket.
The most common mistake we see is piling compost too thick on lawns thinking it will green things up faster. More than an inch on turf can smother grass blades and tie up nitrogen as it breaks down, actually stalling growth for a few weeks. Stick to a thin topdress layer, rake it in so it settles between the blades, and water it in lightly rather than leaving it sitting on the surface.
Compost and mulch do different jobs, so don't substitute one for the other to save a delivery. Compost feeds soil biology and breaks down within a season or two, while mulch sits on top and mostly blocks weeds and holds moisture. If your budget only allows one this round, prioritize compost for beds that have struggled with drainage or plant health, and add mulch as a second phase once the soil is actually improved.
Clay loam is the default soil around Shreveport, and it drains slow and packs tight once summer heat sets in. Compost breaks that structure up gradually, giving roots room to move and letting water soak in instead of sheeting off. With a growing season that runs from mid March past mid November in zone 8b, there's a long stretch where beds and lawns are actively pulling nutrients from the soil. Working compost in during spring or fall gives it time to integrate before the heavy growing months hit.
Finished compost is organic matter that has fully broken down into a dark, crumbly material with an earthy smell. It feeds soil life, improves structure, and helps beds hold water without staying soggy.
Work 1 to 2 inches into new beds, or topdress lawns with a quarter to half inch and rake it in. More is not better. Too thick a layer can smother roots instead of feeding them.
Spring and fall are both good windows. Spring applications feed the growing season ahead, and fall applications break down over winter so beds are ready at first thaw.
