One of the easiest customer service experiences I've had in a long time! Mulch Mound made it so simple. After putting it off for a while, I looked at the weather and knew I needed to get to mulching ASAP before the rain came if I didn't want to wait another week. I put my order in for the next day online and they came right at 9 AM. The employee who dropped off the mulch did a great job, putting it right on the tarp I laid out, she even made sure none of it got on the yard and double checked the truck bed to make sure it all came out. The mulch was exactly what I needed and arrived right on time.
Most fill jobs finish with a few inches of topsoil capped on top, since fill dirt itself is not meant to grow anything. If the area will see grass or a garden bed eventually, order topsoil alongside your fill dirt so both loads arrive together and you are not paying for a second trip.
Fill dirt in Stillwater's clay loam needs to go down in lifts, not one big dump. Spread it 6 to 8 inches deep, compact it with a plate compactor or hand tamper, then add the next layer. Skipping this step is the number one reason people end up with a sunken patch two years later, especially near foundations or pool decks where standing water from clay soil makes uncompacted fill settle even faster.
Do not confuse fill dirt with topsoil and expect grass to grow in it. Fill dirt is subsoil, screened of debris but stripped of the organic matter that plants need. If you are raising a yard area that will eventually get sod or a garden bed, cap the compacted fill with 4 to 6 inches of real topsoil before you plant anything.
Order fill dirt and topsoil together when you know the finished use of the area, since one truck trip covers both materials and saves you from scheduling delivery twice. For pool backfill or foundation work where nothing needs to grow, skip the topsoil layer entirely and put the savings toward more fill, since that project only needs structure, not soil life.
Stillwater sits on clay loam that already drains slowly, so low areas around driveways, foundations, and backyard pools tend to hold water after a spring storm rolls through. Fill dirt gives you a way to raise that grade with a material that compacts solid, unlike topsoil which stays loose and keeps settling. With OSU's campus and the surrounding neighborhoods built on rolling terrain near 948 feet elevation, a lot of local backfill and grading work is about correcting drainage before anything else gets built or planted. This is structural work first, landscaping second.
Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
