One cubic yard covers about 54 square feet at a 6 inch depth, and most fill jobs run 6 to 12 inches depending on how low the area sits. Measure the length and width of the space you are raising, decide your target depth, and order in cubic yards from there. For anything deeper than 8 inches, plan on building it in lifts rather than dumping it all at once.

Most fill jobs finish with a topsoil cap once the grade is where you want it, especially if grass or beds are going back over the area. A compactor or plate tamper is worth renting alongside the delivery since fill dirt has to be compacted in lifts, not just leveled and left.
