Landscaping fabric goes down first to keep rock from working into the sandy loam underneath. Steel or aluminum edging keeps the rock contained and off walkways, especially useful where wind can otherwise scatter loose stone. Some customers also order a run of larger boulders or accent rock to break up a big flat bed.

In Victorville's dry heat, landscaping fabric under rock matters more than in wetter climates because there is no rain to help settle rock into a natural crust. Use a heavier woven fabric, not the thin stuff, and overlap seams by several inches. Skimping here means weeds pushing through within a year or two, which is the main complaint we hear from rock installs done without proper fabric prep.
Rock beds near landscaping or trees will still collect leaves and debris, they just do not decompose into the rock the way they would in mulch. Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
