Landscape fabric underneath is what makes rock a decade-long install instead of a weed bed, so it is worth laying before the stone goes down. Edging, whether steel or stone, keeps rock from migrating into the lawn during mowing. Some Villanova customers pair a rock border with mulch closer to plantings that actually want organic matter breaking down into the silt loam.
Service area
Lay landscape fabric before the rock, not after, and overlap seams by several inches so silt loam does not migrate up through gaps once the ground thaws each spring. In Villanova's climate, freeze thaw cycles through winter can shift unsecured fabric edges, so pin them every couple feet. Skipping fabric means the rock eventually presses into the soil and becomes impossible to fully remove later.
The biggest mistake we see locally is treating rock beds like mulch beds and expecting them to feed the soil. They will not, and leaves from mature trees around older Main Line properties collect in rock instead of breaking down into it. Plan on blowing or raking leaves out each fall before the first frost around November 5, or they will mat down and trap moisture against the fabric.
Rock is a one time install, so it is worth spending the extra effort getting depth and edging right the first time rather than treating it like an annual refresh. Pair it with mulch in planting beds where you want organic matter working into the silt loam, and reserve rock for foundations, downspout aprons, and low traffic groundcover areas where permanence matters more than soil health.
Villanova's silt loam holds moisture longer than sandy soil, which means organic mulch near foundations tends to stay damp and break down fast. Rock does not care about that, it sits on top of fabric and sheds water instead of soaking it in. With zone 7a winters and a first frost around November 5, freeze thaw cycles can heave loose material, so a properly bedded rock layer holds its line better than mulch does through a Main Line winter. It is a common choice here for downspout aprons and beds that need to look finished without seasonal upkeep.
Landscape rock is stone chosen for how it looks as much as what it does. River rock is smooth and rounded, decomposed granite is fine and packs firm underfoot. Both are sold by the cubic yard for beds, borders, paths, and dry creek beds.
River rock stays loose and rolls, so it suits beds, borders, and drainage runs where it can sit in place. Decomposed granite compacts into a firm surface, so it suits paths, patios, and anywhere you will walk or roll a wheelbarrow.
Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
