Arroyo Grande sits at just 118 feet above sea level where the creek valley opens toward the dunes, and that low, sheltered position shapes everything that grows here. The sandy loam that built the valley's vegetable farms drains fast and holds almost no summer moisture, so beds around the Village and the older homes near the Swinging Bridge need a steady mulch layer just to keep roots cool. With roughly 20 inches of rain falling almost entirely between November and March, Zone 10a gardens run dry for eight months straight. Marine fog rolling in from Pismo Beach and Grover Beach softens the heat but also feeds moss and weeds in shaded corners.
