My experience with Mulch Mound was great and super easy. I ordered two yards of screened topsoil and was able to get it delivered within 2 days. They came in my requested time frame (afternoon) and dropped it off where I asked on my driveway. The topsoil was exactly what was advertised, clean with no rocks or other debris. The price was reasonable. I plan to use them again in a couple weeks to order compost for my garden beds.

Salt spray reaches well inland in Los Osos and slowly builds up in the top layer of soil. Once or twice a year, run a deep leaching irrigation that pushes water past the root zone and carries accumulated salts down with it. A generous compost layer helps too, since organic matter buffers salinity and improves the sandy profile's ability to hold onto nutrients.

Amend beds with two to three inches of compost tilled into the top eight inches before planting, then mulch over the top. The compost gives roots something to grip and dramatically improves water retention. Repeat the compost addition every couple of years, since organic matter burns off quickly in a well aerated sandy profile.

Ceanothus, coyote brush, coffeeberry, and manzanita all shrug off coastal conditions and pair naturally with a coarse bark or gravel mulch. Group them by water need so you can irrigate zones separately. Once established after their second winter, most need only occasional deep summer watering.
Los Osos sits low against the back bay, where sandy soil and salt laden air shape every planting decision. Lots are compact in much of town, and access can be narrow, but the need for organic matter is constant. Compost and bark do the heavy lifting in gardens that would otherwise drain to nothing.
