I used Mulch Mound to have 3 cubic yards of garden soil delivered. The process was easy and I love that I didn't have to call anyone. I placed my order online, picked my delivery date, laid out my tarp and the dirt was delivered. My delivery had to be pushed back, but I was kept informed via text, which was great. So why not 5 stars? The description of garden soil on the website is "A balanced mix of topsoil and organic amendments ready for raised beds, flower gardens, and new planting areas. Good drainage, solid nutrients, easy to work with." What I got was more like fill dirt. It had a lot of gravel, a lot of clay, and random trash mixed in. I didn't test the soil to see if it actually had "amendments" because I already have compost and alpaca manure ready to add, but if I'd known the quality of the dirt was going to be the same as the bagged dirt I bought last year, I probably would have gotten 2 yards of top soil and a yard of leaf compost for better quality, especially since the leaf compost is cheaper. Photo of my mountain of dirt and just some of the trash I found in it.

Towaco's proximity to Pyramid Mountain means many residential lots sit under a thick deciduous canopy that limits sunlight for much of the growing season. When designing shade garden beds in these conditions, choose a fine or medium bark mulch rather than dyed wood chips, which can compact and repel water under heavy tree cover. Layer the mulch loosely at 2 inches deep to allow moisture from New Jersey's 51 inches of annual rainfall to reach shade-tolerant ground covers like hostas, astilbes, and ferns without pooling around their crowns.

Try Our CalculatorTowaco's wooded lots often have compacted soil under tree canopies, where root competition limits the nutrients and moisture available to smaller surrounding plants. Applying a two inch layer of bulk compost around the drip lines of large trees each fall replenishes organic matter without smothering surface roots. This annual practice steadily improves soil structure in Towaco yards and keeps established trees and neighboring plantings healthier through the full Zone 6b growing season.

Raised beds are an excellent solution for Towaco homeowners who want to grow vegetables or sun loving perennials but lack open ground away from the canopy. Filling frames with a custom blend of bulk topsoil and compost sidesteps the root competition and poor fertility common in shaded Towaco lots. Position beds in any southern or western clearing to capture the most available light during the growing season, which runs from May 1 through mid October.
Get Started with Mulch mound Today
Towaco is a quiet neighborhood within Montville Township, bordered by Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area and the Rockaway River greenway. The natural setting here is genuinely stunning, with mature forest canopy shading many residential lots and giving gardens a distinctly woodland character. That same canopy makes thoughtful plant selection critical, as light is often limited and competition from tree roots is real. MulchMound.com delivers the bulk mulch and soil materials Towaco homeowners need to work with their landscape rather than against it.
