Landscape fabric goes down first so the rock stays clean and does not sink into the clay loam beneath it. Steel or aluminum edging keeps the stone from migrating onto the lawn during mowing, and a few yards of soil or mulch nearby for planting pockets lets you mix rock beds with actual greenery instead of an all stone yard.
Abilene's clay loam does not drain fast, so before you spread rock, grade the bed slightly away from the foundation and lay landscape fabric that overlaps at the seams. Skipping the grading step means water pools under the stone after heavy spring rain and the bed stays soggy for days, which defeats the whole purpose of switching off mulch.
The biggest mistake we see locally is piling rock right up against tree trunks or shrub bases. It holds heat against the bark through Abilene summers and traps moisture at the crown once cooler fall weather hits, which stresses the plant. Leave a few inches of bare space around any trunk before the stone starts.
Rock is a one time purchase, so it pays to size the order right rather than guess low and pay for a second delivery. Pair a smaller volume of a premium decorative stone near the entry or front bed with a more basic rock for larger side yard or drainage areas, which stretches the budget without looking mismatched from the street.
Abilene's clay loam holds water after a rain then cracks hard in the summer heat, which is exactly the kind of ground that chews up organic mulch and turns it to sludge or dust within a season. Rock does not care. Laid over fabric it sheds water off the surface, resists the wind that comes through this part of Texas, and holds its place through the freeze thaw swing between our November first frost and April last frost. It shows up a lot along foundations near downspouts and in the low water beds common in newer Abilene subdivisions.
Landscape rock is stone chosen for how it looks as much as what it does. River rock is smooth and rounded, decomposed granite is fine and packs firm underfoot. Both are sold by the cubic yard for beds, borders, paths, and dry creek beds.
River rock stays loose and rolls, so it suits beds, borders, and drainage runs where it can sit in place. Decomposed granite compacts into a firm surface, so it suits paths, patios, and anywhere you will walk or roll a wheelbarrow.
Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
