One of the easiest customer service experiences I've had in a long time! Mulch Mound made it so simple. After putting it off for a while, I looked at the weather and knew I needed to get to mulching ASAP before the rain came if I didn't want to wait another week. I put my order in for the next day online and they came right at 9 AM. The employee who dropped off the mulch did a great job, putting it right on the tarp I laid out, she even made sure none of it got on the yard and double checked the truck bed to make sure it all came out. The mulch was exactly what I needed and arrived right on time.
Landscape fabric underneath is what makes this a decade-long install instead of a five year one, so budget for it if you have not already. Edging, whether steel or stone, keeps the rock from migrating into the lawn during our heavier spring rains. If you have beds near mature trees, expect to rake leaves out of the rock each fall since it will not let them decompose in place like mulch would.
Service area
In Coshocton's silt loam, water tends to sheet across the surface instead of soaking in fast, so grade your bed with a slight slope away from foundations before you lay fabric and rock. Skipping this step is the number one reason rock beds pool water after storms. A 1 to 2 percent slope, barely noticeable by eye, is enough to keep water moving toward your downspout drainage instead of sitting against your foundation.
The biggest mistake we see with rock beds here is skipping fabric to save money upfront, then fighting weeds pushing through within two seasons. Since this is a one time install meant to last, spend the extra effort on fabric and pinning it down properly at the seams. Also plan on blowing or raking leaves out of rock beds each fall, since unlike mulch, leaves just sit on top and get soggy instead of breaking down.
Order slightly more than your calculator says, especially if your beds have curves or irregular shapes, since rock is far more annoying to source again in a small top-off quantity than mulch is. Pairing rock beds with a mulched planting area nearby lets you use organic material where you actually want soil health, and rock where you want permanence, without mixing the two in one bed.
Coshocton sits on silt loam that drains slowly and holds water after the spring melt, which is exactly the kind of soil that turns mulch beds soupy and makes rock a better long term choice near downspouts and foundations. With a last frost around May 1 and first frost around October 20, you have a wide window to install without fighting frozen ground. Rock does not compact or wash the way organic mulch does in our clay-heavy silt loam, so it holds its grade through heavy rain. It is a poor choice anywhere you want shrubs or perennials to actually feed off decomposing material.
Landscape rock is stone chosen for how it looks as much as what it does. River rock is smooth and rounded, decomposed granite is fine and packs firm underfoot. Both are sold by the cubic yard for beds, borders, paths, and dry creek beds.
River rock stays loose and rolls, so it suits beds, borders, and drainage runs where it can sit in place. Decomposed granite compacts into a firm surface, so it suits paths, patios, and anywhere you will walk or roll a wheelbarrow.
Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
