Fairfield's clay soil holds water longer than sandy soil, so grade your bed slightly away from the house before laying fabric and rock. Skipping this step means water sits under the stone during winter rains between December and February, which can shift the rock and create muddy low spots that show through the surface within a season or two.
The most common mistake locally is skipping fabric to save a step. Without it, clay soil works its way up through the rock over a year or two, and you end up with a muddy, weedy layer instead of clean stone. Fabric is what turns this into the one-time install it is supposed to be, rather than something you are redoing in three years.
Rock pairs well with a narrower band of mulch around actual plants, since rock alone starves nearby shrubs of organic matter as it warms and cools with Fairfield's summer heat. Ordering enough rock in one delivery for the whole project, rather than topping off later, also keeps the color and size consistent across the bed, since batches can vary slightly.
