Landscaping fabric underneath is worth the extra step here, since Moss Bluff's silt loam will otherwise let rock sink and weeds push through within a season or two. Edging keeps the stone from migrating into the lawn during heavy rain. Some customers pair a rock bed near the foundation with mulch further out where they still want plants to get organic matter.

In Moss Bluff's silt loam, skip laying rock straight on bare soil. Lay landscaping fabric first, then rock on top, or you will get sinking and weed push through within a year because this soil holds moisture and compacts unevenly. Fabric under rock against a foundation also blocks the capillary moisture that silt loam wicks upward, which keeps the area drier right where downspouts dump water fastest.
The biggest mistake locally is treating rock like mulch and expecting it to feed nearby plants. It does not break down, so anything planted directly in a rock bed needs its own soil amendment before the rock goes down, not after. Once it is installed, working compost in around root zones becomes a lot harder.
Rock is a one time cost, not an annual buy like mulch, so it is worth ordering slightly more than the minimum calculation to cover edging and depth variance. A partial yard delivered later rarely matches the first batch in color, since screened stone runs in batches. Buying the full amount up front avoids that mismatch entirely.

Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
