Landscape fabric underneath is what makes this a one time install instead of a yearly chore, so budget for it if you do not already have it down. Edging, whether steel or a poured concrete curb, keeps the rock from migrating into the lawn during New Berlin's freeze thaw cycles. A lot of customers also order a few yards of mulch for planting beds that need organic matter, since rock and mulch tend to split the yard by zone rather than compete for the same bed.
Service area
Lay landscape fabric before the rock goes down, not after, and overlap seams by at least 6 inches so silt loam does not creep up through the gaps over time. In New Berlin's clay-heavy silt loam, fine sediment can migrate upward through thin fabric within a couple seasons, and once that happens weeds root directly in the rock bed and defeat the entire purpose of the install.
Rock does not feed soil and it traps fallen leaves, so plan on blowing or raking beds clear before New Berlin's oak and maple leaf drop each October, ahead of the Oct 11 first frost. Leaves left to decompose in rock create a thin soil layer that then grows weeds right in the stone, which is the single most common complaint we hear from rock bed owners after year two or three.
Order the full quantity in one delivery rather than staging it in smaller loads, since bulk rock pricing favors volume and a half finished bed sits exposed to mud through New Berlin's spring thaw. If you are also ordering mulch for planting beds, schedule both for the same delivery day to save a second trip charge and get the whole yard done at once.
New Berlin's silt loam holds water well, which is good for lawns but means bare soil around foundations and downspouts turns soft and muddy through spring thaw and fall rain. Rock over landscape fabric solves that, shedding water instead of absorbing it, and it does not compact or wash out the way mulch can near a downspout outlet. With winters running past the Oct 11 first frost and snow load sitting on beds until close to the Apr 30 last frost, rock also holds its position under snow better than lighter organic material. It is a practical choice for the low, flat beds common on New Berlin lots near the Glacial Drumlin Trail corridor.
Landscape rock is stone chosen for how it looks as much as what it does. River rock is smooth and rounded, decomposed granite is fine and packs firm underfoot. Both are sold by the cubic yard for beds, borders, paths, and dry creek beds.
River rock stays loose and rolls, so it suits beds, borders, and drainage runs where it can sit in place. Decomposed granite compacts into a firm surface, so it suits paths, patios, and anywhere you will walk or roll a wheelbarrow.
Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
