Landscape fabric underneath is what turns this from a few seasons of tidy stone into a decade long groundcover, so it is worth laying before the rock goes down. Edging material keeps rock from migrating into lawns or gravel drives, common in older New London neighborhoods with mixed surfaces. Some customers also order a small amount of topsoil separately for the planting pockets they leave inside the rock beds.
Service area
In New London's sandy loam, skip laying rock directly on grade. The soil drains well but it is loose enough that stone will slowly work its way down and mix with dirt over a couple of seasons. Lay landscape fabric first, pin it down at the edges, then spread rock at 2 to 3 inches. This keeps the stone on top where it belongs and makes the install effectively permanent instead of a project you redo in five years.

Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
