Landscape fabric underneath is the single biggest factor in how long a rock bed stays clean, so order it alongside your rock rather than treating it as optional. Steel or poly edging keeps the stone from migrating into the lawn during heavy spring runoff. Some customers also pair a smaller amount of mulch for planting pockets within the rock bed where they want shrubs to actually get organic matter.

Lay landscape fabric before you spread rock, not after, and overlap seams by at least six inches since Rapid City's wind gusts off the plains work loose edges over time. Skipping fabric means clay loam soil below will work its way up through the stone within a couple seasons, turning clean gray rock muddy brown and defeating the whole point of a low maintenance bed.
The biggest mistake we see locally is installing rock right against downspouts without a splash block or extension first. Rapid City gets sudden heavy spring rains, and without something to break up the water flow, it will carve a channel straight through the rock bed and undermine your fabric within a year or two.

Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
