First time purchase from Mulch Mound!! First what I liked! Easy to order online and straight forward pricing and delivery. The driver was on time and courteous and delivered my Mulch exactly where I requested! The product is of good quality and comparable to others I have purchased from before. Now what I DID’NT LIKE! I have been mulching the same house and yard for almost 20 years. I always order the same amount and don’t have any issues with covering the same area but this year I fell about a yard short. I was home when the mulch was delivered and when the driver dumped it I noticed that it seemed a bit less than I was used to. I didn’t apply it any thicker than usual and probably a bit thinner than usual because I was worried about running out.
Landscape fabric goes down first and matters more with rock than with any other material, since this is the one product you are not refreshing every year. Steel or aluminum edging keeps the stone from migrating into lawn or gravel driveways, which is a common complaint we hear on flatter Roanoke Rapids lots. A few cubic yards of drainage gravel underneath handles anywhere water pools before the decorative layer goes on.
Lay fabric before the rock goes down, not after, and overlap seams by at least 6 inches since Roanoke Rapids gets enough seasonal rain to wash fine soil up through gaps over a few years. Skipping fabric on sandy clay loam means weeds root directly in the rock bed within a season or two, and once that happens you are hand pulling instead of just topping off gravel.
Rock traps leaves instead of breaking them down, and Roanoke Rapids has enough oak and sweetgum cover that fall leaf litter will sit on top of your rock bed all winter if you do not blow or rake it out. Plan on a fall cleanup pass before frost, usually mid November here, so leaves do not mat down and stain the stone.
Since this is a one time install rather than an annual refresh, it pays to slightly oversize your order rather than run short mid job. A partial second delivery costs more per yard in time and hassle than ordering an extra half yard up front, especially if you are also doing a border bed near a patio or the trail where color matching future orders gets harder.
Roanoke Rapids soil runs sandy clay loam, which drains fine but still holds moisture near the surface after our heavier spring rains. Rock over fabric keeps that moisture from wicking up into mulch and rotting it, which matters near foundations along older Roanoke Valley Gateway neighborhoods with less grading. It also handles the swings from zone 8a winters to humid summers without breaking down like organic mulch does. People here use it around downspouts and AC pads where standing water is a recurring problem.
Landscape rock is stone chosen for how it looks as much as what it does. River rock is smooth and rounded, decomposed granite is fine and packs firm underfoot. Both are sold by the cubic yard for beds, borders, paths, and dry creek beds.
River rock stays loose and rolls, so it suits beds, borders, and drainage runs where it can sit in place. Decomposed granite compacts into a firm surface, so it suits paths, patios, and anywhere you will walk or roll a wheelbarrow.
Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
