Landscaping fabric underneath is the single biggest factor in whether this rock stays a low-maintenance bed or turns into a weed patch in a few years. A steel or aluminum edging strip keeps rock from migrating into the lawn during heavy Louisiana downpours. Some jobs also call for a few bags of paver base if you're setting stepping stones through the bed at the same time.

Lay landscaping fabric before the rock goes down, and overlap seams by at least 6 inches since Shreveport's clay loam shifts slightly with wet and dry cycles, which can open gaps in loosely laid fabric over a season or two. Skipping fabric means the rock slowly works itself into the clay below and you lose depth within a couple years, especially near downspouts where water concentrates.
The biggest mistake we see locally is installing rock right up against foundation plantings that need organic matter. Rock beds don't feed soil the way mulch does, so anything planted directly in rock will struggle in Shreveport's clay loam over time. Keep rock for pure groundcover zones and use mulch or amended soil beds for anything you actually want to grow.
