Landscape fabric underneath is what makes this a decade-long install instead of a weed patch by next July, so it is worth laying down before the rock goes in. Steel or aluminum edging keeps the stone from migrating into the lawn once the till freezes and heaves each winter. Some customers also order a small amount of mulch separately for the actual planting pockets within a rock bed, since rock alone will not feed the soil around perennials.

Lay landscape fabric before the rock goes down, not after, and overlap seams by at least 6 inches since St. Cloud's freeze thaw cycles work fabric loose over time if it is not secured well. Pin the edges with landscape staples every 12 to 18 inches. Skipping fabric means you are re-digging rock out of clay soil in a few years to fix a weed problem that fabric would have prevented from the start.
The biggest mistake with rock beds here is expecting them to be maintenance-free. They trap fallen leaves worse than mulch does, especially near mature trees, and a rock bed full of decomposing leaf litter starts feeding weeds anyway. Plan on blowing or raking leaves off rock beds each fall before the first frost, rather than letting them sit and break down into the stone over winter.
Because this is a one time install rather than an annual purchase like mulch, it makes sense to order slightly more than the bare minimum calculation, especially for beds along foundations where settling happens over the first year. A little extra rock kept in a side pile costs less hassle than a second delivery for one thin patch that settled unevenly.
Decorative Stone in St. Cloud
St. Cloud's glacial till soil drains slowly in spots and freezes hard by late fall, which makes organic mulch a losing bet in beds that already hold water. Decorative rock over fabric does not compact into the clay-heavy subsoil the way bark does, and it will not heave the same way through freeze thaw cycles between the May 7 last frost and the September 23 first frost. It works especially well against foundations and around downspouts, where meltwater runoff is a real spring issue here.
