Landscaping fabric is the real partner here, since skipping it means weeds pushing through within a season and rock that slowly sinks into the silt loam beneath it. Edging material keeps the stone from migrating into the lawn during mowing, and a few bags of topsoil are handy if you're also framing planting pockets within the rock field.

Lay landscaping fabric before the rock goes down, not after, and overlap seams by at least six inches since Waterloo's silt loam shifts enough with freeze thaw to open gaps in a single winter. Skipping fabric means the rock slowly works itself into the soil over a year or two, and by year three you're pulling stone out of mud instead of setting it back down clean.
Rock beds around downspouts fill with leaves every fall, especially near mature trees common in older Waterloo neighborhoods, and wet leaves left sitting will start to compost right into the stone. Blow or rake them out before the first hard freeze in early October, since leaves frozen into the rock are much harder to clear come spring.
Order a slightly larger single delivery instead of two smaller ones if your project is close to the line between cubic yard estimates. One trip means one set delivery and no risk of a color or batch mismatch between loads, which matters more with rock than mulch since stone lots can vary slightly by shipment.
Waterloo's silt loam drains slowly, and combined with the freeze thaw swings of a zone 5a winter, low spots around foundations and downspouts stay soggy well into spring. Rock over fabric solves that by keeping soil off the surface and giving water somewhere to move instead of pooling against the house. It also holds up better than mulch through the wet spring and hard winters here, since it won't compact, wash out, or need replacing after frost heave. Homeowners near the Sullivan Brothers museum area and older Factory City neighborhoods often use it to dress up narrow side yards where grass never thrived anyway.
