One of the easiest customer service experiences I've had in a long time! Mulch Mound made it so simple. After putting it off for a while, I looked at the weather and knew I needed to get to mulching ASAP before the rain came if I didn't want to wait another week. I put my order in for the next day online and they came right at 9 AM. The employee who dropped off the mulch did a great job, putting it right on the tarp I laid out, she even made sure none of it got on the yard and double checked the truck bed to make sure it all came out. The mulch was exactly what I needed and arrived right on time.
Fill dirt does the heavy lifting of raising or leveling ground, but it needs a finish layer if anything is going to grow on top, so topsoil is the natural next order for lawns or beds. If the area gets foot traffic or drainage flow, a layer of base gravel underneath before the fill can help with long term stability, especially in low spots that hold water in our clay loam.

Do not dump fill dirt in one deep pour. Place it in 6 to 8 inch lifts and compact each one before adding the next, especially over Wichita Falls clay loam, which already moves with moisture swings. Skipping compaction is why people see a pad or backfill area sink a few inches a year or two later. A plate compactor for small jobs or a rented roller for larger backfills is worth the half day it takes.
The most common mistake we see locally is people using fill dirt as a planting bed and wondering why nothing grows well. Fill is subsoil, low in organic matter and structure, so it is meant to be a base layer only. Always cap finished fill with 4 to 6 inches of real topsoil before seeding, sodding, or planting anything, even drought tolerant natives that do fine in our zone 8a heat.
If you are backfilling around a foundation or pool, order enough fill to finish the job in one delivery rather than staging it in small batches. Half loads mean extra delivery trips and awkward partial compaction lifts that do not tie together well. Combine your fill order with topsoil for the cap layer in the same planning stage so both trucks can be scheduled close together and you are not left with an unfinished grade for weeks.
Wichita Falls sits on clay loam that drains slow and shifts with the wet dry cycle, which is exactly why low areas near foundations and along fence lines tend to stay soggy or sink over time. Fill dirt is the structural fix for that, giving you a stable base to build a grade change, a pad, or a backfill zone before anything else goes on top. It is not a growing medium, so on a lawn or bed project you will still cap it with topsoil. Most jobs here are pool backfills, foundation grading, or leveling a yard that has settled unevenly against that clay.
Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
