I used Mulch Mound to have 3 cubic yards of garden soil delivered. The process was easy and I love that I didn't have to call anyone. I placed my order online, picked my delivery date, laid out my tarp and the dirt was delivered. My delivery had to be pushed back, but I was kept informed via text, which was great. So why not 5 stars? The description of garden soil on the website is "A balanced mix of topsoil and organic amendments ready for raised beds, flower gardens, and new planting areas. Good drainage, solid nutrients, easy to work with." What I got was more like fill dirt. It had a lot of gravel, a lot of clay, and random trash mixed in. I didn't test the soil to see if it actually had "amendments" because I already have compost and alpaca manure ready to add, but if I'd known the quality of the dirt was going to be the same as the bagged dirt I bought last year, I probably would have gotten 2 yards of top soil and a yard of leaf compost for better quality, especially since the leaf compost is cheaper. Photo of my mountain of dirt and just some of the trash I found in it.

Complete Your Downey Outdoor Project
We’ve got you covered with our full line of landscape supply products, from premium mulch and quality soil to decorative stone, helping you create a cohesive, professional landscape that enhances your property for years to come.
In Downey, where summer temperatures regularly push past 90 degrees, choosing the right ground cover for sun-baked slopes and parkways can make a measurable difference in water bills. Native ground covers like lantana or dwarf coyote brush establish quickly, require minimal irrigation once rooted, and hold soil in place far better than bare mulch alone. Pairing these plants with a two inch gravel top dressing around the base suppresses weeds and reflects heat away from sensitive root zones.

Try Our CalculatorDowney's relatively flat terrain and clay-influenced soils can result in water pooling near foundations and low-lying garden areas after winter rains. Amending problem areas with a mixture of coarse compost and fine gravel worked into the top eight to ten inches of soil improves drainage noticeably. For persistent low spots, redirecting runoff using simple swales lined with river rock and native sedges turns a drainage problem into an attractive landscape feature that also supports local wildlife.

Delivering to Downey, California
Primary ZIP: 90241Established trees in Downey yards often compete with lawn grass for water and nutrients, leaving both looking stressed by midsummer. Replacing the turf beneath tree canopies with a generous mulch ring of arborist wood chips extended out to the drip line removes that competition entirely. Trees respond with noticeably improved vigor and deeper green foliage within one growing season, and the mulch zone eliminates the need to mow around trunks, reducing time spent on yard maintenance each week.
